As
the urban population of
Cape
Town
mushrooms, and more and more pressure is put on environmentally sensitive areas
of the
Cape
Flats
,
it is imperative to facilitate the education of our population as to the
necessity of appreciating and conserving our natural areas.
Formal education, day
trips and other initiatives such as YES provide such
education opportunities. Yet a
truly meaningful change of attitude is often only gained by a more extensive
interactive experience within the remaining natural areas. These opportunities
are critically lacking on the
Cape
Flats
and the
Cape
Peninsula
in general. Where they do exist, they are often
deficient from a number of perspectives.

Company Profile
Who Is CTEET?
ZEEP
is a programme run by the Cape Town Environmental Education trust, non-profit trust that runs high quality, low cost outdoor
programmes designed to challenge and change the lives of those young at heart.
The emphasis is on safe, fun education. The programme is endorsed by WWF-SA Table Mountain Fund and the City of Cape Town.
Summary of primary
objectives
1.
1.To provide quality, affordable Environmental Education Programmes to
youths from all communities in the Cape Metropolitan Area.
2.
2. To
help primary and high schools meet their Outcome Based Education needs in Human
& Social Sciences, Life Orientation and Natural Science.
3.
To encourage youth to become personally involved in environmental and
conservation issues.
4.
To develop alternative strategies for long term sustainability in
environmental education.
5.
To provide an opportunity for personal and social development.
What does CTEET offer?
Nestling in the heart of the
Cape Flats, below the majestic Cape Peninsula mountains lies some of the most
important wetlands in South Africa. Two nature reserves, (Rondevlei
and Zeekoevlei) lie within the proposed 1,400 Ha
False Bay Coastal Park. Here, trained Field Rangers run fully guided Environmental Education Programmes for groups of
20 – 40 plus people. Programmes are tailor made with client groups and range
from 1 – 3 days and 1 - 2 nights. During this time, young people get in touch
with nature and come to an understanding of their crucial place in the greater
scheme of things. Free of the glare and glitz of the city night-lights and
malls, they can gaze in wonder at the glittering universe above them. Away from
the blare of music and the sound of rushing traffic, they can sit with pounding
heart and bated breath, listening for the grunt and splash of a hippopotamus,
only 5 meters away. Here they learn to appreciate nature, each other and
themselves, as they ponder with mesmerized stare, the flickering flames of a
campfire. Such moments bring healing, hope and a sense of belonging and purpose.

Why should I choose CTEET?
A day in the life of ZEEP
-
LOCATION – We operate
within the False Bay Coastal Park (approx 1400 Ha) and within two proclaimed
nature reserves. (Rondevlei, 210 Ha and Zeekoevlei, 344 Ha)
-
CENTRALITY - The
facilities are in the Cape Flats surrounded by large residential areas. Good
transport links provide easy access to the Metropolitan Area.
-
INFRASTRUCTURE – The
program is closely linked with Rondevlei, which has excellent education
facilities. These include a fresh water aquarium, a live reptile display, a
museum, a multi media theatre, a resource centre and 6 bird-viewing hides.
-
UNIQUENESS - ZEEP is
currently the only facility on the Cape Flats offering overnight
programs dedicated to environmental education. Day programs include dragon
boating, orienteering and fishing (Large Carp and Sharp tooth Catfish). The hike to the
raised bush camp passes through an area that supports Ostrich, Black
Wildebeest, and a variety of other mammals. Nocturnal animals such as Grysbok,
Porcupine, Gerbils, owls etc. occur. Night programs include a trail and star
gazing.
-
AFFORDABILITY – The trust
subsidises previously disadvantaged communities so that all young people can
participate.
-
BIODIVERSITY – The area
supports 6 red data plant species and many fynbos plants. Beach and wetland
ecology with related issues such as pollution and conservation can be
demonstrated. It supports over 220 species of birds, 33 amphibians and
reptiles and 17 mammals (including a family of Hippo’s). 5 fresh water fish
are also in the vleis.
-
QUALITY - Our Field
Rangers are experienced in environmental issues, education, and camping. They
are specialists in their field and have level 1 First Aid certification.
