The Zeekoevlei Environmental Education Programme views the
local community as integral to the survival of the park in general and the
programme in specific. To this end we run a training course twice a year
to give unemployed local people skills and the chance to become field rangers.
They are then able to play a part in the education of the youth and earn
something while doing so.
With the aid of a generous grant from The South African
Breweries we will be able to offer an even more exiting training course and a
certification ceremony. We greatly appreciate this partnership.
Trainees are required to volunteer their services on four
camps as part of their training. This gives management the opportunity to
observe and evaluate them on the job so to speak. After this voluntary
period, they are employed on a camp by camp bases.
After one year of working on a camp by camp bases, they are
considered for promotion to senior field rangers. In this capacity, they
assume full control of the camps and are also assigned administrative duties.
The senior field rangers are paid a retainer and a higher camp by camp rate.
The training programme is rather intense and includes all
